A Herd of Horse Portraits

Before Christmas, I always get a little flurry of commissions for Christmas presents, which is lovely. I am usually commissioned for dogs, so when I was commissioned for five horse portraits I was very excited to get my equine artistry on again! These are five beautiful horses each postcard sized, on A3 watercolour paper. Painted in Derwent Inktense watercolour pencils layered both wet and dry, with a splash of gouache and white gel pen here and there for highlights and texture. From the reference photos, tack was removed and those that were plaited were unplaited for their portraits.

I should probably apologise for the poor photo quality – I have been in the middle of relocating and travelling so a lot of my equipment is in storage, including my scanner! I have to do what I can with a phone camera at the moment, there is only so much Photoshop can correct for and the gloomy winter evenings are not helping…
